Divorce: A Test Of Your Faith

“To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.”  1 Corinthians 7:10-11

Our Christian marriages are falling apart just as quickly as the world’s marriages. As followers of Christ we must realize that God does not like divorce.  In fact, he only gives one reason he would allow divorce.  And if by chance you do get a divorce you are to remain unmarried/ single until your “spouse” passes away.  Why does God hate divorce?

The vows that we take on our wedding day, are first to the Lord and then to our mate.  When we get married we are making an oath with God that we will be with this person until death do we part.  When we get a divorce we are breaking our oath to Him.  Another reason God hates divorce is he no longer views us as an individual.  When we get married we become one in God eyes.

We have all heard about the rare occasion when twins are born conjoined.  They usually share a vital organ like the liver, kidneys, or brain.  The doctors usually suggested that separating them is possible but the risk of losing one of them is high. Getting a divorce is similar to conjoined twins being separated surgically.


Before we are married we are two ( in the mother’s womb the children are two) when we enter the holy union of marriage we become one ( somewhere in the process of developing, the children become one) The risk to end a marriage is the same as being surgically split.  The bible says “and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one.” Mark10:8

Getting a divorce is not the answer.  Do you believe that you serve a God that can take care of ANY situation that may arise in your life?  The word says “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,” Ephesians 3:20

I tell you today, no matter what stage of divorce you are in, be it, the beginning ( contemplating it), Middle (emotionally detached) or final ( Moved out and ready to sign the papers) God can turn it around. Your marriage was in his will, “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.” Romans 8:29

God has a reason for your marriage. If you are willing to fight for your marriage God can turn it around. It’s not over until God says it over. All he needs is one, just one of you, to desire his will for your marriage and your marriage can be revived.

Everything you have been through in your marriage God can get the victory out of it “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 He can use the two of you to minister to other couples who are going through what you have gone through.

God isn’t going to give our marriage back to us just because we are Christians “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?” James 2:14 The word says Faith without WORKS is dead. You have to be willing to roll up your sleeves and fight for it.  How do you fight for it? Pray.

 

Challenge:  Go before God and ask him to show you the truth. What do I mean by the truth? What part of this marriage falling apart was because of you.  It won’t be easy to change yourself, but with God anything is possible. I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.” Philippians 4:13
